“I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
As rightly quoted by Whitney Houston, children are truly the future of this world. Model United Nations is a fun and educative way to learn and understand how the working of the United Nations helps maintain peace between countries and improve people’s living conditions. It shows us how the different committees of the UN get together and internationally solves disputes.
The Dubai Scholars Model United Nations (DSMUN) 2018 was the first ever MUN conference held by Dubai Scholars. There was an amazing response to the number of people who took part in this auspicious three-day event (1st February – 3rd February 2018), the knowledge retrieved, and last but not the least the memoires each delegate will cherish.
The Secretary Generals of the DSMUN 2018 are Abhimanyu Baruah and Mir Enan. Each committee was headed by two people, the chair and the co-chair. The chair and co-chair of General Assembly First was Ahmed Rayyan Abbasi and Rahul Thomas, for Security Council, Mohammad Zamaa and Ankita Sunil, World Health Organisation, Yash Barot and Oudad Hakim, World Bank, Annada Rathore and Kunaal Dembla, and for the Human Rights Council, Raiaan Mubashir and Sara Toofail respectively.

We asked the secretary generals, chairs and co-chairs about their experience heading each committee and their reviews on the topics and debates. Here are their responses;
Oudad Hakim from class 11-A, co-chair of the World Health Organisation quoted “It was one of the best MUN’s I’ve been to till now. The topics were very controversial, and since we had past experiences, we knew which topics would do well and which wouldn’t.”
Ankita Sunil from A levels, co-chair of the Security Council quoted that “Security Council was intense, there were fruitful debates and everyone contributed a lot. I also learnt about how to be tolerant.”
Abhimanyu Baruah from A levels, Secretary General quoted “Overall it was
A really great experience, met lots of people, and had many new experiences. I feel that in some committees for example the Security Council, the topics should’ve been more specific.”
Ahmed Rayyan Abbasi from 11-A, chair of the General Assembly First committee quoted that “It was my first chair experience and there were really heavy debates for our topics. The topics were accurate enough as they gave delegates the chance to present balance arguments and have fun sessions!”
Sara Toofail from 11-B, co-chair if the Human Rights Council quoted, “Chairing being my first experience was wonderful. The topics were infancy revolving around current issues that needed light. It gave almost all the delegates a chance to speak as they had some relations to the topic.” As this was the first MUN of Dubai Scholars, the expected number of participants was 70. As this was the first MUN of Dubai Scholars, the expected number of participants was 70. However, the school got a participation of 101 students from ours as well as other schools! We interviewed five delegates, one from each committee representing different countries. Two questions were asked to them; one about their topics, and the other about their overall experience of the event.
Here are their responses; Reagan Ramos from Saint Mary’s Catholic High School Dubai, Oud Mehta, was a part of the General Assembly First committee as the delegate of the United States of America, quoted “it was a really enlightening experience for me. Was very well organised and managed very well by the chairs and respective secretaries. The topics selected were quite relevant to the crisis prevalent in the world today and were quite intense themselves; especially at the international summit.” Anandita Abraham from Cambridge International School Dubai, was a part of the Human Rights Council as the delegate of People’s Republic of Bangladesh and quoted “it was actually surprisingly well organised considering it was Dubai Scholars’ first MUN and everyone was really friendly and welcoming. Our topic on the ‘Rohingya crisis’, was narrow and focused. But the second topic ‘Child Labour’ was a little vague considering there is a lot to discuss and take into account." Hadi Felix from Saint Mary’s Catholic High School Dubai, Oud Mehta, was a part of the World HealthOrganisation as the delegate of Colombia quoted that “the overall experience was a nice and calm one and that the topic was decent to appeal to countries participating in the committee.” Aarohi Pillai from Dubai Scholars Private School, part of the World Bank as the delegate of the French Republic quotes “It was my first MUN, and since it was in my own school, it was on common grounds. So, I felt more confident. The topics were fine, very accurate because they were dealing with problems relevant in the news.” Salik Rushdy from Dubai Scholars Private School, was a part of the Security Council as the delegate of the Russian Federation and quoted that “It was my first MUN and it was honestly a great experience meeting new people and I would go again. I think the topics were accurate enough they were contemporary, and current day so they were relevant.” |
The schedule of the event was well strategized and put together. The first day of the event was commenced with the opening ceremony in which the teacher behind this event, Mrs. Smriti Mendonca and the principal Mr. Frank Scarcelli, gave a few words of inspiration to the delegates. Further ahead, the secretary generals and chairs and co-chairs of each committee were introduced. The delegates got a while to converse with one another which was followed by the opening of the first topic of each committee. The next day started off with heavy debates regarding the first topic itself and resolutions were passed. Towards the end of the day was an event called the Social Night, where everyone got together, danced to the music and bonded with one another more. The third day started off with the second topics. Extreme heated debates took place and everyone was quite actively participating. Resolutions were passed and that was the last individual committee sessions for DSMUN 2018. The International Summit, where in, each country would get together with delegates representing the same country as theirs from different committees to internationally discuss and pass resolutions on the chosen crisis in each committee. That was the end of the DSMUN 2018 journey.
